Game Day Words of Encouragement

January 09, 2017

Hundreds of children enroll each year in Upward Sports leagues throughout the United States. Upward is designed to teach boys and girls, kindergarten through 6th grade, about God, scripture, and Christ-like behavior. It truly is a league of its own, a place for learning sportsmanship and Christian values.

Parents play an important role, and that role can impact a child’s interest and enthusiasm for sports and spiritual growth. Studies have shown a positive relationship between parents who are involved with their child’s activities and the child’s enjoyment of the activity. Based on research, there are three statements a parent can say both before and after games for encouragement, without making everything about performance.

Before the Game:

  • Have fun.
  • Play hard.
  • I love you.

After the Game:

  • Did you have fun?
  • I’m proud of you.
  • I love you.

Sound too easy?! Well, there is one more positive phrase a parent can easily say each Upward game day: “I love to watch you play.”

That’s it. “I love to watch you play.” Easy enough!
